Daylight Savings and the Dangers of Drowsy Driving

Daylight Savings marks the beginning of the Spring season. The days get longer and the nights get warmer, and while the extra daylight is great for evening activities, the change can be tough on our bodies. One of the most dangerous consequences of this time change is drowsy driving

According to research from the University of Colorado, fatal car accidents increase by 6 percent the week after DST kicks in. In the journal, Current Biology, researchers looked at 732,835 auto accidents recorded in the U.S. Fatality Analysis Reporting System from 1996 to 2017. This data showed a steady increase in fatal car accidents the week after the DST transition, with the most crashes occurring in the morning. This increase is likely due to drivers losing an hour of sleep and adjusting to driving to work while dark.

How to Prevent Drowsy Driving

Drowsy driving is a factor in many car accidents, so it’s important to be aware of the dangers and take steps to prevent it. The best way to avoid drowsy driving is to get enough sleep. The CDC recommends at least eight hours of sleep per night. If you can’t get eight hours, try to get a power nap of 15-20 minutes before you hit the road, and if you feel drowsy while driving, pull over to rest or get an energizing drink.

At The Fran Haasch Law Group, we understand that no amount of financial recovery can undo what you have been through. However, a fair settlement or jury verdict can ease the financial burden of unexpected medical bills, lost income, and other economic and non-economic damages associated with your accident.

We have obtained multi-million-dollar jury verdicts and settlements in cases involving auto accidents, as well as claims concerning wrongful death and catastrophic injuries. Here are some of our case results:
