What is a Honda Grom?

Honda first introduced the Grom in 2013. It comes with a 125cc engine that can top out at anywhere from 55-73 mph. Several trim levels are available, including an ABS model for added safety on wet roads or steep hills. The bike is loved by motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide because of its compact size, fast acceleration, and easy handling characteristics.

While the Grom is good for getting around city roads, taking it on the highway is another matter. A reviewer for USA Today wrote that the Grom doesn’t have enough power to be able to keep up with the typical motor vehicle on a highway.

Florida law states that no vehicles with less than a 5 BHP (brake horsepower) can be used on an interstate highway. The Grom has 10 BHP, but that doesn’t mean you should take it on I-4. If you have a strong headwind, you’ll probably struggle to get it to a maximum speed of more than 60 mph.

The Grom is one of three Honda bikes with a 125cc engine, along with the Super Cub and the Monkey. While the Grom is closer to a mini-sports bike, the Super Cub is more like a motor scooter. The Monkey is a combination moto/sportbike.

Is a Honda Grom considered a Motorcycle?

Technically, a Honda Grom is considered a motorcycle by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV, because it has an engine displacement of more than 50cc. As a result, you’ll need to either have a motorcycle endorsement on your standard driver’s license or a “motorcycle-only” license.

What are the Requirements to Drive a Grom in Florida?

Grom riders need to follow all Florida motorcycle driving and licensing laws. Riders under the age of 21 are required to wear a helmet, and all riders need to wear eye protection.

Are There Any Special Licenses Required?

No, there are no special licenses required to drive a Grom in Florida. As long as you have a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement or a motorcycle-only license, you’re good to go.

Yes. Honda Grom owners can use their motorized vehicle on all Florida public roadways. As stated earlier, however, using it on an interstate is not advisable.
